We are excited to announce the Smart Museum of Art’s acquisition of Magalie Guérin’s screenprint Untitled (JP+CC2) as part of the Art to Live With program.
Based on a composite of two paintings, Guérin’s fifteen-layer screenprint stages her specific sensibility to color, pattern, form, and shape. Capturing the exploratory nature of the printmaking process, Untitled (JP+CC2) registers abstraction as a generative mode of suggestion across mediums. This locates the print within Guérin’s broader set of artistic concerns, which critic John Yau described as “the line between painting and drawing, between the original and the copy, and the space between seeing and comprehending.”
In recent years, the Smart, with input from UChicago students, has acquired works by artists including Bethany Collins, Ann Hamilton, Ester Hernandez, Jenny Holzer, Judy Ledgerwood, Faheem Majeed, Takashi Murakami, Pope.L, Barbara Rossi, Yinka Shonibare CBE, Orkideh Torabi, and Amanda Williams.
Established in 1958, Art to Live With offers University of Chicago students living in residence halls the opportunity to borrow original works of art to display in their dorm rooms.
