    About the Artist's Proofs

    Untitled (Gray Fox), 2025
The edition Untitled (Gray Fox) emerged from Mari Eastman's interest in the print-based works of Edvard Munch and Japanese woodcuts, specifically Ukiyo-e prints, which depict the fleeting pleasures of everyday life in Japan.

We are pleased to offer 4 Artist's Proofs not initially released as part of the edition of 34.

In this image, a gray fox is momentarily frozen in time and space; it looks beyond the frame at something we cannot see. Behind the animal, space subtly changes: each print offers a different backdrop ranging from a textured grain to a Bokashi, or gradient effect. To make this edition was to experiment with color layering, specialty papers, and printing technique.

Several of the trial prints emerged as particularly special variations of this fox. In the works offered here we see the  delicacy of paper made from gampi fiber; dynamism in the woodcut's "noise"; and quiet intensity of a reduced color palette. They are deeply reflective of the artist's exploratory approach to mark making and color, and her standing interest in animals as subject.

These images felt so notable that, with the artist, we moved to sign them and make them available as Artist's Proofs.
