Sofía Fernández Díaz
A print to benefit Re/Match, Chicago
Sofía Fernández Díaz’s limited edition intaglio print, cuerpo, emerged from a series of quasi abstract drawings of erosion, sediment, and seeds the artist created during her recent time in Oaxaca, Mexico. With precision, the artist etched the layered renderings to three copper plates which then comprised a single composite image. A process of translation, she considered through every imprint and trace: what gets left behind after a transformation in order to make something else possible? Is this image cellular (micro) or is it cosmological (macro)?
n cuerpo, rich raw sienna blends with earthy purple inks to reveal the activity of making itself: the process of blending multiple colors onto a single print is called à la poupée; and in the studio, techniques such as “sugar lift” and “spit bite” captured the artist’s painted marks directly onto the plate, allowing happenstance and organic processes to determine the final matrix.
Each print in the edition of 20 is unique, as the circular plates were rotated with each turn of the press.
Fernández Díaz is known for sculptures that are exploratory—like this print process, following materials—but this intaglio print is more connected to the sketchbook work that underpins her practice. An illumination of her research, memories, and intuitive observation, the print serves as both botanical study and spiritual mapping, evoking cycles of growth, resilience, and transformation.
Sales of this print benefit Re/Match’s 2026 grants to artists.
